Book Flower

Book Flower” by Jack Clark.

Click on the image to see the flip-book in action. Apparently it doesn’t want to work on this blog post.

For our latest project, we had to create a book. The idea behind my book was to show the relationship between city and plant-life. I had all these ideas buzzing around my hand about plant apocalypses and cities on flowers, but in the end, I did this. A simple journey from above a city to the centre of a flower. As uninteresting as the concept is, I like how I accidentally made the pages look like a flip-book. If I had had this idea to begin with I would have made more pages to make the transition from sky to the city smoother.

Oh well, you live and learn.

Give Peas a Chance!

“GIVE PEAS A CHANCE” by Jack Clark.

We were given a list of random words and we had to choose one of them. That word would become the topic of our brief. The brief was to promote and protest the word we had chosen, and because I had theorised that our teachers knew something could be done on each word, I chose arguably one of the harder ones: Peas.

Promoting peas would be easy. I intended to simply create an advert for them, with healthy eating being the purpose. Protesting them however proved to be much harder. I mean, how do protest peas?

To be continued.

Brains perform better when hydrated.

Brains” by The Mill for Drench Still Water.

How did I not see this advert the first time around? Not only does it draw upon the nostalgia factor with the inclusion of the popular character “Brain” from the children’s television show “Thunderbirds”, but it also does it with the song choice “Rhythm is a Dancer” by Snap!

This advert doesn’t just rely on nostalgia to succeed, the clever wordplay “Brains perform better when hydrated.” makes it even more memorable.

Yomar Augusto

UNITY” font by Yomar Augusto.

Yomar Augusto is a Graphic Designer and Artist that is based in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He is disciplined in many different fields, the one that I’m interested in though is his Type work. The font on the shirts above is his work with Adidas for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.

I like. Go see more of Augusto’s work at his website here.

Meyoko

Alaus Oculatus” by Melissa Murrillo.

Melissa Murillo is an Illustrator that is based in Berlin, and is better known under the alias “Meyoko”. Her work is truly breathtaking, and not necessarily in a positive way. But don’t get me wrong, that isn’t a bad thing! Her intricate and bold style is overshadowed by the dark subject matters she covers, producing beautiful, if not slightly unnerving artwork.

You can see more of her work on her website here: www.meyoko.com.

Any conclusions you may come to from reading the highlighted text are not intended and I didn’t create this with malicious intent.

Nintendo 3DS: Super Mario Bros” by Cesar Enrriquez.

Close one eye when looking at the image above.

Cesar Enrriquez is an American digital artist that is based in New Jersey. He is best known for his 3d versions of 2d game graphics (also known as Sprites). The most notable part of his work is that even when he creates the 3d image, it still retains the original image’s composition and appearance. With this in mind, the images he creates are often iconic and recognisable in gaming culture (and sometimes outside of it), and have made some kind of impact for whatever reason.

For example, his interpretation of a scene from the classic and iconic game Super Mario Bros. (image above), uses the same aesthetic of the original game and draws upon nostalgia. It also features the enemy “Goombas” and the protagonist “Mario” as 3d models; this 3d effect is amplified further with the image shaking, with ‘Mario’ and the closest ‘Goomba’ (the main focus) being the most still and the more distant elements (the second ‘Goomba’ and the bushes) being the most ‘shaky’. This shaking effect is rather clever, as it is exploiting our eyes’ perception of depth, so that the 2d image appears 3d.

Plus, I like people who like Mudkip, fact.

Adornment Claw

The brief was to create an “adornment” that could be worn in a post-apocalyptic world of our own creation. In my world, the surface has been made uninhabitable due to nuclear devastation and humans have been forced underground to survive. The adornment is a glove/claw that helps protect the user’s hands, make digging with one’s hands easier and can act as a weapon against the radiation-ridden beasts that dwell underground.

It was made by modifying a simple winter glove with detachable leather claws. The glove itself also featured padded areas for additional grip and metal fingertips (made from fimbles of course).

The image doesn’t really do it justice and I would have liked to have taken this picture in a more appropriate setting, but that wasn’t possible.

I remember the pool of blood. Still feel guilty…

There should be a third one in this series. But yet again, time was not on my side.

The brief was to create a series of three images that used phrases that we had created from a story someone else in the group had written. My three phrases were: “I remember”, “The pool of blood” and “Still feel guilty”.

The silhouette in the black image is supposed to be an elephant (since they never forget) and the red image; streams of blood coming from the wound on the hand.

I will get a third one done as soon as I can get some green ink.

Final Layers

The brief was to create an “animation” with “light” as the topic. So instead of choosing to depict ‘light’ in related to darkness, we chose to depict light in relation to weight. The animation itself hasn’t really got a set narrative; it was mostly our group seeing what we could do technically.

P.S. And yes, I was wearing all of those clothes at once.
